Precautions After Gynecomastia Surgery

Posture

  1. It is recommended to sleep on your back with your upper body slightly elevated for about 1-week after surgery.
  2. It is recommended to sleep face-up, for 3-months after surgery and avoid to sleep on your side for up to 6-months.

Meals

After surgery, it is recommended to engage in both exercise and dietary adjustments. Avoiding high-calorie foods is advisable.

Swelling

  1. Swelling and bruising may be more pronounced with increased suctioned areas, lasting up to 1-3 weeks. However, swelling usually diminishes by 70-80% within 3-4 weeks.
  2. Around 1 month after surgery, major swelling subsides, with minor swelling gradually reside over the course of 2-3 months. For an objective comparison of results, it is recommended to wait at least 3 months after surgery.

Wound Care

During the first 1-2 days after surgery, there may be light discharge (oozing) from the surgical area, which is not considered bleeding. Rest assured as it is the normal symptom.

Guidance on Wearing Compression Garment or Chest Compression Binder

  1. It's crucial to begin wearing compression garments immediately after surgery as instructed to aid in reducing swelling.
  2. You should wear it for a minimum of 4 weeks, and it's recommended to wear it for more than 2-3 months. The duration of wearing it may vary individually depending on the post-surgery progress.

Shower

  1. Shower or bath is possible 1 week after surgery.
  2. Sauna or steam bath is not allowed for at least 1 month after surgery.

Exercise

  1. Avoid upper body exercises that primarily engage the chest muscles for 1 month.
  2. From 2-weeks post-surgery, light walks/strolling that don't strain the body are permissible.

Resumption of Driving and Work

  1. Driving should be avoided for at least 1 week as sudden movements may induce bleeding.
  2. For desk jobs, routine work can typically resume from the 3rd to 4th day after surgery. However, for occupations involving physical exertion, it's advisable to refrain from such activities for 2 weeks.
  3. If your work involves a lot of physical movement, please follow our medical staff's instructions carefully to avoid any risk related with hematoma (abnormal collection of blood outside of a blood vessel) or seroma (collection of watery fluid) formation.

Medication

  1. It is important that you take the prescribed medicine regularly at the same time every day, and if you experience symptoms such as diarrhea, or rash, please stop taking it and contact our hospital.
  2. The prescribed medication contains painkillers, but if you still experience significant pain after taking it, you may additionally take Tylenol.
  3. Since multi-vitamin (especially, vitamin E) can cause bleeding, it is recommended to avoid taking it for at least 1-month after surgery, unless it is necessary. (Please avoid taking aspirin for 1-week after surgery.)
  4. It is advised not to take anti-inflammatory medicines because it can cause bleeding.

Alcohol Drinking & Smoking

Smoking and drinking are prohibited for 1 month after surgery due to their negative effects on bleeding, wound healing progress, and infection.

Post-Surgery Progress

  1. Pain levels can vary from person to person, with most patients experiencing moderate pain. Patients undergoing extensive liposuction may experience increased pain levels.
  2. Itching is a normal symptom during the recovery process. It is important not to scratch or irritate the affected area. If necessary, ice packs can be used to alleviate the itching.
  3. During recovery, it is common to experience chest tightness, numbness, tingling sensations, and pain with movement. These symptoms are typically temporary and part of the normal healing process. Sensations usually return gradually over 3 to 6 months, and in most cases, full recovery occurs within a year.
