This is Dr. Dongphil Jo, a plastic surgery specialist at AB Plastic Surgery.
Today, I would like to write answers to the most common questions asked by patients planning facial contouring and braces during consultations.
Please take note and visit plastic surgery or dental clinic to receive an accurate consultation from a specialist.
Q. Can I get braces after facial contouring? Is facial contouring possible while wearing braces?
Getting braces after facial contouring is possible without problem approximately 1 month after surgery.
Since you are in the recovery process for about a month after facial contouring, you must be careful as opening your mouth and chewing may be uncomfortable compared to before surgery. Additionally, since there are cases where surgeries such as cortical bone resection or masseter muscle reduction are performed simultaneously, the surgical area may become hard and lumpy. Therefore, if you are thinking about getting braces, you will need to go through a recovery process for about a month because it is not natural for you to open your mouth. Since the recovery process varies depending on the individual, you need to have an accurate consultation with a dental specialist to see if braces can be done in your current condition. You do not need to worry too much as most of the symptoms are relieved 3 months after facial contouring.
Facial contouring while wearing braces is also possible without any problem.
Surgery is fully possible without removing the braces worn after orthodontic treatment. However, when consuming food after wearing braces, a lot of foreign substances get caught between the braces and the teeth. If facial contouring is performed during initial correction, it is difficult to open the mouth sufficiently during the recovery period, so special attention must be paid to oral care. If you are planning facial contouring and braces, visit each clinic, receive sufficient consultation, and plan an appropriate surgery/procedure schedule. If you take sufficient oral care and undergo a proper recovery process after the surgery, it will not affect the facial contouring and braces at all.
“Braces to improve mastication, malocclusion, and tooth alignment has become very popular. I think patients are very worried about facial contouring and braces because they are procedures related to the jaw. In conclusion, I think facial contouring and braces can be viewed separately. However, as with all surgeries, we recommend that you undergo a post-surgical recovery process before proceeding with another surgery or procedure. It is important to visit the clinic and consult with a specialist to develop a proper surgical plan.”
