When is it advisable to start wearing glasses after a rhinoplasty?
I am Dr. Shin Hyo-Jeong, plastic surgery specialist of AB Plastic Surgery. Many patients who have been wearing glasses often inquire whether wearing glasses after nose surgery might cause changes in the shape of their nose or lead to side effects due to pressure. Therefore, today, I would like to take this opportunity to discuss the timing for wearing glasses after nose surgery.
Q. I underwent both eye and nose surgery simultaneously, and now I need to wear sunglasses or glasses, but I'm cautious during the early stages of recovery. When would it be safe to start wearing glasses after nose surgery?
It is advisable to start wearing glasses approximately one month after rhinoplasty.
If you have previously worn glasses, you should be careful about wearing glasses after nose surgery. First, if you wear glasses in the early stages of surgery, there is a possibility that the weight of the implant may push it out. Second, the implants used during rhinoplasty are placed in the area between the eyebrows, and there is a possibility that the implants may move during the process of putting on and removing glasses. Usually, about one month after nose surgery, the implant gradually adheres to the surrounding tissue, reducing the risk of movement. Therefore, we advise patients to wait at least one month before wearing glasses.
If you have poor vision after rhinoplasty surgery, we recommend wearing contact lenses for a while.
Depending on eyesight, some individuals can manage daily activities without glasses, while others cannot. If vision is significantly impaired, contact lenses may be used temporarily. However, if eye surgery was also performed, contact lens use should be approached with caution, as inserting lenses can interfere with recovery. For patients who need to return to daily activities immediately, eye and nose surgeries are generally recommended at separate times. If rest without glasses or lenses is possible for about one month, combined surgery may be considered.
In summary, avoiding external pressure such as wearing glasses during early recovery is beneficial for healing and surgical outcomes. Generally, surgical areas stabilize within one month. Patients are advised to avoid glasses during this period and plan surgery schedules carefully during consultation to minimize daily inconvenience.
