I am Dr. Shin Hyo-Jeong, plastic surgery specialist of AB Plastic Surgery. Many patients who have been wearing glasses often inquire whether wearing glasses after nose surgery might cause changes in the shape of their nose or lead to side effects due to pressure. Therefore, today, I would like to take this opportunity to discuss the timing for wearing glasses after nose surgery.
Q. I underwent both eye and nose surgery simultaneously, and now I need to wear sunglasses or glasses, but I'm cautious during the early stages of recovery. When would it be safe to start wearing glasses after nose surgery?
It is advisable to start wearing glasses approximately one month after rhinoplasty.
If you have previously worn glasses, you should be careful about wearing glasses after nose surgery. First, if you wear glasses in the early stages of surgery, there is a possibility that the weight of the implant may push it out. Second, the implants used during rhinoplasty are placed in the area between the eyebrows, and there is a possibility that the implants may move during the process of putting on and removing glasses. Usually, about 1 month has passed since the nose surgery, as the implant gradually adheres to the surrounding tissue and the possibility of movement of the implant decreases. Therefore, we advise you to wear glasses at least one month after the surgery.
If you have poor vision after rhinoplasty surgery, we recommend wearing contact lenses for a while.
Depending on their eyesight, some people can live their daily lives without glasses, while others cannot. If your eyesight is very poor or you need to return to your daily life immediately, please avoid wearing glasses as much as possible and wear contact lenses for one month. However, if you have undergone eye plastic surgery such as double eyelid surgery, eye correction, canthoplasty, etc. in addition to rhinoplasty, you must also be careful about wearing contact lenses. The very act of trying to insert a lens is an act that interferes with the recovery of the surgical site, such as touching the eye and forcing it open. If you need to return to your daily life, such as going to work, immediately after surgery, we recommend that eye surgery and nose surgery be performed at separate times. Conversely, if you are able to rest without glasses and contact lenses for a month, it is okay to have them performed at the same time.
In summary, not only rhinoplasty, but also avoiding anything that may irritate the plastic surgery area, such as wearing glasses, is helpful for recovery and surgery results. Typically, the wound at the surgical site adheres to surrounding tissues and heals safely within one month.
If you have had rhinoplasty, please avoid wearing glasses for 1 month and wear contact lenses. However, we recommend that you be aware of the difficulty of wearing contact lenses when undergoing rhinoplasty and eye plastic surgery at the same time, and to develop a surgical plan during consultation to avoid any inconvenience in your daily life.
