Frequently Asked Questions About Facial Contouring Surgery

It is important to first determine whether a chin implant alone would be effective. Chin implant surgery improves a recessed chin by inserting an implant without cutting the bone. It can be effective when the chin is not severely recessed and the jawbone is relatively small. The surgery itself is relatively simple and recovery is faster. However, in cases of a severely recessed chin, an uneven chin tip, excessive chin muscle tension, or functional concerns, chin implant surgery alone may have limitations. For severe recessed chin cases, chin advancement surgery is generally more effective.
Orthodontic treatment is generally possible about one month after facial contouring surgery. Since the first month is part of the recovery period, opening the mouth and chewing may feel more uncomfortable than before surgery, so caution is necessary. In some cases, procedures such as cortical bone reduction or zygoma reduction are performed together, which may temporarily cause the surgical area to feel firm or tight. Therefore, if you are considering orthodontic treatment after facial contouring surgery, it is recommended to first go through the initial recovery phase. Since recovery speed varies by individual, accurate consultation with an orthodontic specialist is necessary to determine whether treatment can begin safely.
Facial sagging is one possible symptom that may occur after facial contouring surgery, but it does not happen to everyone. Sagging may occur in cases where skin elasticity is significantly reduced, excessive bone reduction is performed, or there is a large amount of facial fat causing excess skin after surgery. Especially in the cheek area, it is important to determine whether the issue is deep soft tissue volume or simply thick subcutaneous fat. If deep cheek fat is excessive and visibly protruding, combining facial contouring surgery with buccal fat removal may help reduce the possibility of sagging. However, when the issue is primarily thick subcutaneous fat rather than deep cheek fat, facial sagging may still occur despite buccal fat management. With appropriate bone reduction based on individual facial characteristics, along with lifting or liposuction procedures when necessary, facial sagging can be sufficiently minimized, so there is no need for excessive concern.
Pin removal after facial contouring surgery is possible, but it is not always necessary. Most patients who consider pin removal are psychologically uncomfortable with the idea of foreign materials remaining inside the body. The fixation pins used in facial contouring procedures such as cheekbone reduction and chin tip surgery are intended to stabilize the repositioned bone after surgery. The materials used in surgery are medical grade metals that have already been proven safe and are widely used in many types of surgeries, including cardiac procedures. The fixation pins used in facial contouring surgery are also recognized as safe and harmless to the human body. Therefore, even when the surgical materials remain inside the body, they generally do not cause health problems. However, if psychological discomfort continues, pin removal may be considered depending on the postoperative condition.
Bones themselves do not contain pain sensing nerves, and the area that feels pain is primarily the surrounding soft tissue. The level of discomfort varies by individual, but most patients may feel the most discomfort for about two days after surgery. Since the discomfort can usually be managed effectively with oral pain medication or injections, there is generally no need for excessive concern.
If the nerve line is positioned low, extensive bone reduction above that area is not possible. However, by adjusting the amount, range, and angle of cortical bone reduction, the best possible result can still be achieved within the patient’s anatomical condition. Before surgery, a 3D CT scan is performed to accurately identify the position of the nerve line, and the surgical approach may vary depending on which areas the patient wishes to improve.
Chin implant surgery is relatively simple, but it is generally suitable only for mild recessed chin cases. For severe recessed chin cases, chin tip surgery is usually more effective. By advancing the bone itself, the position of the neck muscles can also improve naturally, which may help enhance the jawline and neck profile as well.
Temporary numbness may occur in areas such as the cheeks, lips, or teeth after surgery. Although it may continue for about one to two months, most cases gradually improve over the course of approximately one year.
For patients undergoing square jaw reduction surgery as part of facial contouring surgery, a blood drain is usually maintained for about one day. This is done to monitor postoperative bleeding through the drain, and if no issues are observed, the drain is removed the following day before discharge.
