Surgical Method
STEP 1. Customized Surgical Planning
The patient's facial shape, dental occlusion, and jaw position are carefully analyzed to plan the direction and extent of movement of the upper and lower jaws.
STEP 2. Maxillary and Mandibular Osteotomy
The upper and lower jaws are cut while taking into consideration the planned amount of movement, facial skeletal structure, and nerves.
STEP 3. Repositioning of the Upper and Lower Jaws
The osteotomized upper and lower jaws are repositioned according to the surgical plan. When necessary, facial contouring surgery may also be performed to improve facial asymmetry and overall facial shape.
STEP 4. Fixation
The repositioned jawbones are securely stabilized using fixation devices.

If facial asymmetry is caused by an imbalance in the position or growth of the jawbones, improvement may be achieved through orthognathic surgery.
However, facial asymmetry can have various causes, including muscles, soft tissue, and lifestyle habits.
Therefore, it is important to accurately identify the cause and establish an appropriate treatment and surgical plan.
For the first 2 weeks after surgery, only liquids should be consumed. For up to 1 month, soft foods such as porridge, steamed eggs, cake, fish, and pudding are recommended.
Foods should be cut into small pieces and consumed slowly. It is important to maintain a balanced diet with sufficient nutrients and protein.
Greasy foods, alcoholic beverages, spicy or salty foods, and other irritating foods that may cause swelling or inflammation should be avoided. Hard or chewy foods should also be avoided until the jawbones have sufficiently stabilized.
For safety, the type and timing of food intake should follow the instructions provided by the medical team.
Because orthognathic surgery corrects the position of the jawbones, changes in facial balance and contours may occur.
In particular, improvement in conditions such as a protruding lower jaw, retruded chin, or facial asymmetry may result in a more harmonious facial appearance.
However, the degree of change varies depending on each patient’s skeletal structure and surgical plan. In some cases, both functional and aesthetic concerns may be addressed simultaneously.
Recovery time varies depending on the patient’s overall health and the extent of surgery. In general, hospitalization lasts approximately 1 to 2 days, and significant swelling gradually subsides over 2 to 3 weeks.
Most patients can return to their daily activities after approximately 2 to 4 weeks, while residual swelling gradually subsides over several months. Full recovery and stabilization of the facial bones may take approximately 6 months to 1 year.
In most cases, orthognathic surgery is performed in conjunction with orthodontic treatment.
Orthodontic treatment is used to align the teeth into the appropriate positions before surgery, followed by postoperative orthodontic treatment to stabilize the dental occlusion.
However, depending on the patient’s condition, a surgery first approach may be possible, in which surgery is performed before orthodontic treatment.
