Hello, this is Dr. Chan-Eol Seo, board-certified plastic surgeon at AB Plastic Surgery in Gangnam, Seoul.
When patients are concerned about a low nasal bridge, a mild dorsal hump, or a drooping nasal tip, many begin by researching surgical rhinoplasty. However, worries about surgery, recovery time, and cost often lead people to look for non-surgical nose procedures instead.
As a result, nose filler and thread-based nose lifting have become popular alternatives. While these treatments can provide improvement in select cases, they are not suitable for everyone and have clear limitations that should be understood before deciding.
In this article, I will explain the differences between nose filler and nose lifting, who may benefit from each option, and when these treatments may not be recommended.
Can Nose Filler or Nose Lifting Create a Celebrity-Like Nose Shape?
Many patients ask whether nose filler or lifting can achieve the same sharp, slim nasal shape seen in celebrities without undergoing rhinoplasty.
In reality, creating a highly defined nasal bridge and precise contour is very difficult with filler or lifting alone.
Most dermal fillers used for the nose are based on hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring substance in the human body. Hyaluronic acid is biocompatible and highly hydrophilic, meaning it attracts and retains water. This property allows fillers to maintain volume after injection.
When injected into the nasal bridge, filler can increase height temporarily by adding volume. However, because it is a gel-based material, it lacks the structural rigidity of implants used in surgical rhinoplasty. Over time, filler may spread laterally, causing the nose to appear rounded, wider, or swollen rather than sharp and refined.
For patients seeking a dramatic or highly sculpted nasal line, filler alone often falls short.
Limitations and Risks of Nose Filler Treatments
While nose filler is minimally invasive, it has important limitations:
• Difficulty correcting asymmetry
• Limited ability to create sharp definition
• Risk of filler migration over time
• Potential vascular complications if improperly injected
Repeated filler injections may also make future revision rhinoplasty more complex, even if dissolving agents are used.
How Nose Thread Lifting Works and Who It Is For
Nose lifting with threads involves inserting absorbable barbed threads into the nasal bridge or tip. These threads anchor into the surrounding tissue and create a lifting effect as they apply tension.
This procedure may work better in patients who have:
• Thick nasal skin
• Dense subcutaneous tissue
• A nasal tip that does not stretch easily
In such cases, thread lifting can produce a visible lifting effect, especially for a drooping tip.
However, nose lifting also has limitations. Maintaining long-term height or projection is difficult, asymmetry correction is limited, and fibrotic tissue formation around the threads may thin the skin or affect underlying cartilage over time.
When Combining Procedures May Be More Effective
In carefully selected cases, combining nose filler and nose lifting may provide sufficient improvement without surgery. The key is a precise anatomical assessment, including:
• Nasal bridge height
• Presence of a dorsal hump
• Nasal tip support
• Skin thickness and elasticity
• Overall facial balance
When the treatment plan matches the patient’s anatomy and goals, non-surgical options can be effective.
However, if the desired outcome is not realistically achievable through filler or lifting, repeated non-surgical procedures may lead to complications and make future surgical rhinoplasty more challenging.
Choosing the Right Nose Procedure Starts with Accurate Diagnosis
Non-surgical nose procedures are not “one-size-fits-all.” Choosing the wrong approach or performing treatments excessively can lead to unsatisfactory results or long-term issues.
At AB Plastic Surgery, we focus on honest assessment and individualized treatment planning, whether that involves filler, lifting, surgical rhinoplasty, or a combination approach.
