This is Dr. Dongphil Jo, a plastic surgery specialists at AB Plastic Surgery.

I will take time to talk about a question that many patient worry about, “Is revision necessary due to asymmetrical mismatching after breast augmentation?”

Q. I had breast augmentation, but both breasts are asymmetry. Should I have revision surgery?

1. No one has perfect body symmetry.
Humans are not born with perfect symmetry in the shape of their eyes, nose, arms, legs, hands, feet, etc. Of course, there are difference in the shape and volume of the left and right breasts.

When performing breast augmentation, if the difference in size between the left and right breasts is minimal through accurate diagnosis and examination, there may be a slight difference in volume between both breasts because breast implants of the same size are inserted. Conversely, if there is a large difference in breast size, it is important to reduce the difference in volume by varying the size of the implants inserted into the left and right breasts. Alternatively, in the case of asymmetry in the degree of protrusion of the breasts, implants with different projections (implant heights) are used, inserting lower implants for those with more protrusion and inserting higher implants for those with less protrusion. By performing surgery using implants, it is important to minimize the degree of asymmetry so that the left and right sizes are relatively matched.

Many patients often ask for counseling while looking in the mirror at home, saying, “I am worried that my breasts seem to be uneven.” Rather than self-diagnosing, it is important to visit the clinic in person and consult with a plastic surgeon to determine the surgical method needed and the implant to be used accordingly, as well as undergo a detailed examination of the current breast condition.

In conclusion, I can say that depending on the degree of asymmetry of the existing breasts, there may be a slight difference in left and right volume due to the size of the implant used during breast augmentation. If it has been a while since the surgery, don’t stress about your breasts right away and wait until the surgery area stabilizes. However, if the degree of breast asymmetry is severe despite the passage of time and you are experiencing external and psychological stress, I think it is necessary to consider revision through a detailed diagnosis. I hope this provides a clear answer to those who have the same concerns as above. Please do not worry too much on your own and visit the clinic to receive sufficient consultation.
Thank you.
