This is Dr. Jeonghwan Lee, a plastic surgery specialist at AB Plastic Surgery.

After rhinoplasty, many patients come to the clinic with concerns about whether they may need to undergo revision due to various collisions that impact the surgical area during daily life or whether there are other problems. Today, I will take the time to talk about topics related to nose hit after rhinoplasty.

Q. I got nose hit after rhinoplasty, is it okay? Do I need to have revision?

1. Cases vary depending on the severity of the collision.

If the area of your nose that was hit is only red, it is most likely not a fracture. However, if you feel that the swelling in the area where you were hit is somewhat severe, an examination is needed to determine whether or not you have fracture. If the degree of swelling is severe, it may be difficult to immediately determine whether there is a fracture, so continue to apply cold compresses to the affected area. After 1-2 weeks, visit the clinic where the surgery was performed and receive a CT scan as well as a detailed diagnosis/examination by a specialist. Even if fracture has occurred as a result of the diagnosis, if there are no major problems with the implant location or nasal septum, you do not need to worry too much because in most cases, the progress is observed without additional treatment.

2. Cases vary depending on the postoperative period.

When rhinoplasty is performed, taping or a splint will be worn for about 2 weeks to protect the surgical area. You must be especially careful during this period as it is not good to have impact to the surgical area. If you have just had your splint removed and hit your nose, it is best to be aware of the situation, contact the clinic immediately, and visit the clinic for a checkup. Even if you get hit for about a month to 6 months, no major problems usually occur, but this can also vary depending on the severity of the hit, so if you hit hard, you may need a fracture or implant inspection. If it has been more than a year since the surgery, the implant has settled into place, so there is usually little deformation of the implant to the extent of hitting, but if swelling or pain is severe depending on the degree of hitting, we recommend you visit the clinic for a checkup

In conclusion, after rhinoplasty, the degree of impact applied to the surgical area and the resulting swelling and pain can be considered important issues.

As you go about your daily life after rhinoplasty, there may be situations where you drop your cellphone, get hit by a ball while exercising, or suffer various impacts. As I mentioned, if you have suffered a mild impact, you usually return to your daily life without any problems after observation, so there is no need to worry about revision rhinoplasty.
